Our brothers and sisters in Iran should be free. By “free,” I mean in particular that they should throw off the yoke of coercive religion. In a free society, agents of religious authority are never given coercive (i.e. political) power. The people may listen to the leaders of their various faiths. But they should not be coerced into one particular belief or interpretation of the universe by those same leaders. It is one thing to heed preachers and prophets who criticize and recommend courses of life. It is another to allow yourself to be yoked to their rule “in the name of God,” even if they promise a godly democracy, as they do in Iran. A man is a man, and a man of God is still just a man. And homo homini lupus est.
